I was prompted to create an improvement to the UNL campus. I started by thinking about what would benefit people in a utilitarian way and remembered the lack of public outdoor water fountains. I had recently visited the south of Chile and seen glaciers in person. This had me thinking of climate change and how much water affects our quality of life. I sketched up several Ideas, and found the idea of drinking from a melting glacier was compelling. I then used sketch up to create this 3D model to represent my sketches more physically.
I was challenged to create a comfortable chair using only 1" by 2" boards and screws. I tried to measure myself and give it features I enjoyed in my current chairs. Starting with sketches I did as much math as I could to get what measurements I would need. I then worked to physically create it, but once it was done I realized the medium had more limitations than I was prepared for. I ended up bending some boards which created tension. The back rest which I had lowered so I could crack my shoulders over, was too angular to be comfortable to do so. I did not like how the feet felt on the floor, which I ended up remedying by crochetting stuffed socks for the feet. I'm proud of the final product, but I would do more if I had more time (and different resources). I am still considering if adding cushions would fix it, but I won't know until I do.
let's work together sometime
